Junk

Property Complaint Checklist

Refrigerator with the door still on plus loose garbage and trash behind this student "box" rental. See Trash Guidelines for more info.

There is more junk left all over our community than ever before. There is also more trash and junk cars too. Old refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, stoves, microwaves, couches, heaters, building materials, carpets, windows, doors, tires, auto parts, and other junk is left out or put out inappropriately.

We are also aware that many appliances that have been put out for collection and had the fee paid and a sticker attached are still there for weeks or even months!

They often sit for weeks or even months and are unsightly. A little bit here and there is bad, but as it piles up it ruins the neighborhood.

Old refrigerators and freezers are especially dangerous because children have suffocated inside them playing hide and seek. Too many people simply put them out back assuming they get picked up with the rest of the trash. Not!

Most junk needs to be put out a certain way, at a certain time and in a certain place to be picked up. Appliances require the payment of a fee and a tag. Most, but not all, of the junk is around rentals where tenants just put it out and hope somebody else will deal with it.

A lot of junk appears when the students leave after school. All of their used furniture and appliances end up on the boulevard or in the alley for someone else to deal with. Often the landlord gets stuck paying to have it hauled away.

The City does have Trash & Recycling Guidelines that provide the basics, but too many are not being followed by a small number of people, so we end up with junk all over.

The City R.E.N.E.W. Action Plan has helped in a few areas, but this is only part of the solution. The City has to be more aggressive in spotting inappropriately placed junk. The City's garbage hauler and contract haulers need to report problems they encounter on their routes, rather than just hope things bet better on their own.

These old stoves sat outside a rental for weeks on the curb until a complaint was filed with the the Building & Inspection Dept.! Appliances are not picked up with the regular trash. A $20.00 fee is charged for pickup and disposal. See Trash Guidelines for more info.

Two old couches on Pine St boulevard. These have been there for weeks because the garbage is picked up in the alley, not on the curb! Even if pickup is scheduled for the curb, these can't bee easily seen from the street on weekdays because this street is parked solid. See Trash Guidelines for more info.

Isn't this pretty! Smashed computer monitors, a washing machine and an old tire. We must find a better way to deal with our electronic trash rather than add it to the landfill. See Trash Guidelines for more info.

Loose construction debris in front of an owner occupied property. We need to find a way for small amounts of debris like this to be disposed of properly. See Trash Guidelines for more info.

A student moves out and their furniture ends up on the boulevard. Often these are so filthy and smelly from spilled food and beer they are of no interest to charitable organizations. See Trash Guidelines for more info.

A party couch sits outside another student rental to rot until someone complains or drags it to the curb. See Trash Guidelines for more info.

A pair of hot water heaters sitting on a curb in front of a rental property. This rental has trash pickup in the alley and these have no tags. Also this is a sign that a licensed plumber did not do the work because they usually dispose of the old hot water heaters. See Trash Guidelines for more info.

An old boat abandoned in an empty lot. See Trash Guidelines for more info.

Piles of miscellaneous junk dumped in an empty lot.  See Trash Guidelines for more info.

An old gas cylinder underneath a pile of brush behind a multiple unit rental. This is sitting between the dumpster and a neighbor's garage.  See Trash Guidelines for more info
